Exercise 2 | 24h tracing

To trace means to discover by investigation; it means to follow and mark the course or position of something or someone. Tracing includes action and addresses the phenomena of place and time. Our area of interest and its surroundings change within a day-cycle and incorporate different characteristics and atmospheric moods. This exercise will be about the tracing of specific conditions over a time-frame of 24 hours.

Exercise 3 | layered mapping

To map means to record and represent in detail the spatial distribution of facts. The product, a map, is representing true data in a clear language of pictorial description. There is a series of given methods how to draw a map, but by deciding on the data you want to map as well as on the method to represent it, maps can be very personal and give their makers the power to define measured values in their terms.

Exercise 4 | surveys & interviews

This exercise will focus on quantitative and qualitative data collection through surveys or interviews in – or on – the area of your site along the river Spree. While a survey is a investigation on the opinions or experience of a group of people, based on a series of written-down questions; the interview is generally a meeting of people face to face, asking and answering questions as well as leading a conversation.

Exercise 5 | urban-water-culture

In which ways has the Spree river contributed to the urban development and what evidence is there of "culture" occupying the river? How could this potential be fully exploited? – Our goal is to identify spatial interpretations of Berlin's specific "urban-water-culture". A single area and its situations will be examined more precisely with heightened sensitivity to the influence of the water and considerations of scale.

Research Studio

The research studio will deal with the development of the Obere Stadtspree from a social- spatial perspective. The empirical research will follow the methods of the Aktionsraumforschung (Rieger/Schubert,2005). The main question the studio poses for the research is: How is the current development of the Obere Stadtspree to evaluate in terms of a sustainable urban development?

The contribution of the research is the reflection on conflictive urban developments in specific of inner-city water areas like the Obere Stadtspree is thought to represent.

Exercise 1 | Reference Case

Groups will analyze important key-reference cases related with the case of the Obere Stadtspree as:

  1. Cases of Inner-city water areas
  2. Regeneration of inner-city water areas
  3. Redevelopment of urban industrial areas
  4. Waterside mega projects
  5. Flagship developments in urban-water areas

Exercise 2 | State of the Art of Obere Stadtspree

Groups will transcribe and summarize the important key-presentation of the Workshop: “Blicke auf die Obere Stadtspree” held at the TU Berlin in Oktober 2010. The second part of the exercise aims to enter into a dialog with the stakeholder trough the presentation of the transcript.
